The fantastic and stunning art of Christopher Rush is ingrained in the minds of Magic: The Gathering players. He illustrated art for more than hundred of the strategy game's earliest cards, including the most expensive one of all: the Black Lotus.
We're saddened to report that Christopher Rush passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10. He was 50.
No details have been shared about Rush's death, but his spirit will surely live on in the Magic community. In addition to illustrating memorable cards like Lightning Bolt, Brainstorm, and Mana Leak, Rush also helped the design and marketing series with artwork when the trading card game first released and eventually designe the Mana symbols —Red, Blue, Green, Black, and White—icons, which appear on every single card in the game to this day.You can see all of the Magic cards he designed here.
Aside from Magic, Rush also drew the promotional Mewtwo card given away with issues of Nintendo Power in 2000, and he was the first non-Japanese artists to provide card art for the Pokémon Trading Card game. Rush worked as a freelance artist to provide art for Magic, video games, and other card games before his death.
