Pokemon Go Dev Updates PokeCoin Rewards in Gyms

Niantic Labs has pushed quite a lot of changes and new features for Pokemon Go. The most notable of these would be the new works in Gyms and Battles, where the new features may be a bit polarizing for players.

The new guideline over the Pokemon Go support page pretty much gives a quick breakdown, though some may be polarizing for a few fans. For starters, the Defender bonus rewards have been changed. Previously, players had to deal with getting their PokeCoins immediately upon placing ‘mons in a Gym, lest they get defeated before you can claim your prize. Now, things are a little different:

"You earn free PokeCoins for keeping your Pokemon on Gyms. The longer the Pokemon stay on the Gym, the more PokeCoins you earn. Be sure to give your Pokemon treats often to keep them on the Gym and maximize the PokeCoins you'll earn. When your Pokemon leaves the Gym, it will return to your collection bringing back PokeCoins with it. You'll receive a notification with the amount of PokeCoins earned when your Pokemon returns to you. You redeem your PokeCoins only after your Pokemon returns from the Gym."

The change not only affects claiming prizes, but the duration of the Defender's stay in the Gym in relation to the rewards given have also changed. Pokemon Go Hub confirmed that the rewards of PokeCoins in Gyms have been buffed.

I've had the luck to experience this very change. Before, I would place a ‘mon in the Gym and immediately claim my prize of 10 PokeCoins since the Gym's rotation of teams are pretty fast. Now, my ‘mon was able to stay and defend in the Gym for 10 hours, even without my feeding it Berries.

Granted, it was probably because the Gym I left it at wasn't the most high-traffic of all, so it probably also depends on those factors. I did get 50 PokeCoins from when my Snorlax returned.

There are still admittedly a lot of issues with Gyms, but I feel that this change will enable more people to gather lasting rewards. Not to mention, the almost automatic redemption of PokeCoins ensures that you can still try and fight off in a different Gym without constantly debating whether you'll claim your prize for the day or if you can risk putting another ‘mon in another Gym.
