Pixar's Coco Under Fire For Being Too Similar To The Book Of Life

Pixar had just released the trailer for their next movie, Coco, and it's already getting some flak from looking very similar to 2014's The Book of Life. Several people have already gone online to point out the fact, and ask people to boycott the film.

According to Polygon, Coco actually had a different title back in 2013, and caused outrage after Disney tried to trademark "Dia de los Muertos" as the title. The controversy eventually lead to Disney backing down on the attempt, but the film remained in production, and some people from back then seem to keep their grudge on Coco.

Here are what some people are saying:

hey y'all should condiser boycotting the disney/pixar movie coco because it's a ripoff of the book of life made by white ppl

There's news that Disney-Pixar is coming out with a movie called 'Coco' this year. It's basically a rip-off from Reel FX's The Book of Life.

At first glance, even I thought that Coco looked to similar to The Book of Life. Aside from getting a lot of visual inspiration from the Day of the Dead festival, the film also has the main protagonist have a strong affinity for music, and he also travels to the more colorful Land of the Dead.

I guess what Pixar can do now is try to sell the story as more mature than the 2014 film. Granted the visuals were stunning for TBOL, I thought the story was kind of childish and cheesy. With Pixar, you get a movie that kids can enjoy, but at the same time they delve into heavy themes that can make adults enjoy the movie as well — That's the Pixar standard anyway. If I were being honest, I wasn't really impressed with their latest releases like The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory.

Will Coco bring something different to the table? Let's all hope so. Catch the film when it comes out Nov. 22.
