Pennyworth: Alfred is Getting His Own TV Series from ‘Gotham’ Creator
Bruno Heller is the creator of Fox’s Gotham TV series, and with that show looking to end sometime later this year, it’s been announced that Heller is now working on developing a TV series based on Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth.
As per the Hollywood Reporter, Pennyworth will not be a spinoff of Gotham, so we shouldn’t expect Sean Pertwee to reprise his role. The series is said to focus on Alfred’s life when he was still a British SAS soldier, and we will also see his early relationship with Thomas Wayne.
Epix president Michael Wright had this to say about Pennyworth:
“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series… We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
I’m already scratching my head on what kind of Batman villains will be able to spinoff in this Pennyworth TV show, and the only one I can think of so far is Ra’s al Ghul. Besides that, I don’t think it would make any sense for Alfred to be clashing with the likes of Penguin, Riddler, or Two-Face.
We still don’t have much details on the show, but knowing Gotham, Pennyworth could very well take some liberties with the source material. Then again, this is just speculation on my end.
No premiere date has been set for Pennyworth.
