Sir Patrick Stewart reverses his statements and says that Logan will be his last X-Men movie. Credit the change to a screening of Wolverine's last soulful outing, which reminded the highly-respected actor that sometimes it's better to go out on a high note.
During past press conferences, Stewart, who had played the elder Professor X in The X-Men movie series, had said that he would be more than happy to return in future mutant-centric films. But just recently, he told The Independent in a podcast why he had a change of heart, and that's it best for him and Hugh Jackman, Wolverine's real-life alter-ego, to finally move on.
The epiphany happened while he was watching Logan with Jackman:
"Hugh was sitting next to me, with James [Mangold] on the other side of him. and the audience were clearly very caught up in it and that was satisfying. It got into the last five or six minutes of the movie and Hugh's hand came over and he took mine and he squeezed my hand. He looked at me and he had big tears and, of course, that set me off. Here we are, the two X-Men wiping away the tears at our own movie! And then I thought while we were watching, 'My God, this is a goodbye ending. What could I possibly do that could top this? As I've lived with that idea over the past few days, I thought: 'Yeah, it's absolutely right that we should both of us just move on now.' The franchise won't die [without us]."
The scenes in the movie might have been pretty powerful to make Stewart re-think his position. It is certainly a poignant time for all X-Men fans to realize that Logan is not just Wolverine's - and Jackman's - final goodbye, but Stewart's Professor X as well.
Logan, starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart and directed by James Mangold, will be released in the cinemas on March 3, 2017.
