The upcoming remake of The Crow starring Justice League's Jason Momoa has gotten a bit of a mixed reaction from fans. While reboots and remakes are nothing new, especially in recent years, there is something about The Crow that many fans find sacred and the original film's director Alex Proyas has explained why on Facebook. It's a really emotional post from Proyas and one that fans of the original will probably agree with.
Proyas brought up how he was privileged to know Brandon Lee, the late actor who played the lead role in The Crow in what turned out to be his final performance after a fatal accident. He points out how he didn't take a "film by" credit because he wanted to the film to be Lee's and not his. Should the remake come out, Proyas is worried that the film will erase Lee's contribution to the character.
I know sequels were made, and TV shows, and what have you, but the notion of "rebooting" this story, and the original character - a character Brandon gave life to at too high a cost - seems wrong to me.
Please let this remain Brandon's film.
It's easy to see why the director would feel this way, given how close he was to Lee. Admittedly, it is nice seeing the director not go on about milking franchises or money-grubbing tactics when talking negatively about the remake. Only time will tell if the remake will actually happen, given the troubled history.
