J.K. Simmons will be debuting as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League later this year, and he was expected to come back in any future Batman-related spin-offs. With all the recent delays on The Batman, however, it looks like even J.K. Simmons is expressing his doubt with the franchise.

In an interview with Screen Crush, Simmons explains:

"My part in the first film coming out this fall is very, very small… It’s a little introduction of the character… But whenever the next one gets off the ground, whether it’s The Batman movie or the ‘Justice League’ sequel, and I know those things are getting shuffled around right now … we thought we might be getting to work pretty soon on The Batman but we’ll see what the future brings. Hopefully that’ll be another comic-book character that I get to take two or three or four cracks at."

Simmons had been first introduced to comic-book fans when he played Peter Parker’s cigar-smoking boss J. Jonah Jameson. Though people thought he was absolutely perfect for the role, they still have no idea what Simmons might bring in as Commissioner Jim Gordon. Hopefully when Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is looking for a job, Simmons will return as J.J. for the MCU.

Going back to The Batman, the script is said to have a full rewrite, and with that in mind, actors who were attached to the project with the initial draft — like Joe Manganiello — are now expressing their doubt on whether they’ll be able to star in the movie at all. Manganiello was originally attached to play top-tier assassin, Deathstroke. Guess we’ll have to wait for further announcements.

J.K. Simmons debuts as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, which hits theaters Nov. 17.
