Fans are already expecting a major character to bite the dust in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. After all, the trailer for the movie pretty much gave it away, right? However, it looks like there will be more than just one beloved character who will end up dead in the film.

Director Simon Kinberg spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the intentionally spoiler-y trailer for Dark Phoenix where it is strongly implied that Mystique will be killed (albeit accidentally) by Jean Grey. Interestingly, Kinberg plainly admitted that Jennifer Lawrence's character isn't the only major death in the film.

"There are certainly other major casualties in this," he said. However, Kinberg didn't elaborate on who these "major casualties" will be.

Were there hints in the Dark Phoenix promos? There's a scene that shows Jean taking on Magneto and efficiently destroying his helmet. Additionally, a promo image features Jean using her deadly powers on a hapless victim who looks like either Cyclops or Quicksilver.

But is it possible that Dark Phoenix will effectively kill off all the main characters who were introduced in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class? There have been speculations that the movie will have to tie up loose ends and give a proper goodbye to Magneto, Professor X, and Beast.

On the other hand, these characters could still make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox. We're keeping our fingers crossed but also recommend not keeping your hopes up too high.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will crash into theaters on June 7.
