The Suicide Squad's New Rick Flag Will be Very Different from Original Film

We already know Rick Flag as the stern right-hand man of Amanda Waller in the first Suicide Squad film. However, it looks like we'll see a different, more quirky side of the character in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

In David Ayer's 2016 movie, Flag was introduced as the colonel who struggles between taking orders and protecting the woman he loves. This isn't easy considering that June Moon was also the host of Enchantress, who was basically the main villain in the film. Luckily, things may have changed for Flag now that a new director is in charge of The Suicide Squad and Joel Kinnaman says fans will barely recognize his character.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Kinnaman teased that Flag will be more comedic in The Suicide Squad. This isn't exactly a huge surprise considering that Gunn has a knack for taking serious characters and giving them a humorous side. Interestingly, Kinnaman stated that his experience working on the new DC Extended Universe flick was "fun, light, and easy." However, that doesn't mean that filming wasn't taken seriously.

According to Kinnaman, he had to do "10 takes on a simple line" because they had to get the tone right. Despite all this, it sounds like the former Altered Carbon star truly enjoyed working on the movie.

The Suicide Squad also stars Kinnaman's former castmates Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney. They will be joined by an all-star cast including Michael Rooker, John Cena, Idris Elba, David Dasmalchian, and many more. The film is currently scheduled for release on August 6, 2021.
