Spirited Away follows a young girl named Chihiro who accidentally enters the world of spirits. After her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro must work for a witch's bathhouse and find a way to release them from the curse.

The Hayao Miyazaki film is the second Studio Ghibli movie to get an official theatrical release in China. In December 2018, Chinese fans finally got to watch My Neighbor Totoro in theaters. After Spirited Away, fans can also expect to see Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Wind Rises.

The reason why the release of Spirited Away was delayed for almost 18 years is quite simple. South China Morning Post writes that it was "due mostly to long-standing political tension between China and Japan." However, that didn't stop Studio Ghibli fans from finding an alternative way to enjoy the films. It is reported that "rampant video piracy" ensured that Chinese fans "are already familiar with them."

Spirited Away is currently screening in China. The release dates for the other Studio Ghibli films have not yet been announced.
