If you tuned in to the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 1, chances are you're blown away (heh heh) by how Chapter 8 concluded. But did you also make the connection between the climactic scene and an epic sequence from Breaking Bad? The season finale of the Star Wars series has somehow paid tribute to Gus Fring's unforgettable death scene in the AMC show.
For those who haven't seen Breaking Bad (really?), Gustavo Fring was a truly difficult man to kill. However, he finally met his end in the Season 4 episode Face Off when Hector detonated an explosive attached to his wheelchair. Gus' initial reaction to realizing the plan was to shout in surprise. Although it looked like Gus survived, it is then revealed that half of his face was blown away by the explosion.
It's a jawdropping moment that was almost replicated in the final episode of The Mandalorian, which also featured Giancarlo Esposito. In an effort to defeat Moff Gideon, Din Djarin (that's Mando to you) used his new jetpack to attach an explosive on Gideon's TIE Fighter. The surprised Gideon cries out, "No!" but it is too late as the explosion destroys most of his ship.
Unfortunately, Djarin's efforts didn't work as well as Hector's in Breaking Bad. It was later revealed that Gideon survived the explosion with his face intact and he even has the darksaber in his possession. Needless to say, we're going to see more of this guy in The Mandalorian Season 2.
