Star Wars Subtly Provides Canon Origin Of Mace Windu's Purple Lightsaber

We already know why Mace Windu is the only Jedi who actually has a purple lightsaber. After all, Samuel L. Jackson famously revealed that he only agreed to work on the Star Wars prequel trilogy if he was given a weapon with his color of choice. But now, it looks like Star Wars has given the purple lightsaber an origin that can be considered canon.

In the Claudia Gray novel Master and Apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi had an eye-opening conversation with Princess Fanry, who has taken an interest in the Jedi's weapon. Obi-Wan decides to show the princess just how his lightsaber works and even went out of his way to explain the Kyber crystals in the weapon.

In the book, Obi-Wan tells the princess that the Kyber crystals actually bond with the Jedi who uses it and takes on certain properties from its owner. Although most lightsabers could turn blue or green, Obi-Wan added that "a few crystals even turn purple."

It might be a clear reference at Mace Windu and his purple lightsaber but it also confirms that the Jedi Master isn't the only one with a weapon of that color. For now, Mace remains to be the only Jedi with a purple lightsaber in the Star Wars films but that could change soon.

This isn't the first time that Star Wars tried to explain Mace's unique weapon. As ScreenRant points out, the Expanded Universe tackled the idea by revealing Mace had a special amethyst crystal. Another explanation states that Mace was closer to the Dark Side so his lightsaber became a combination of blue and red.
