Star Wars: Kylo Ren's Crossguard Lightsaber was Inspired by A New Hope Poster

There is little doubt that Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber is one of the coolest (and possibly the most unstable) lightsabers in the Star Wars Universe. In addition to that, it also has an awesome backstory. It has just been revealed that the weapon was actually inspired by the original poster for A New Hope.

The revelation comes from Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak, who shared the information on his official Twitter account. Take a look at his tweet below.

"The lateral beams emanating from #LukeSkywalker's lightsaber in Tom Jung's 1977 posters for the original #StarWars (aka Episode IV: #ANewHope) inspired the crossguard design of #KyloRen's lightsaber for #TheForceAwakens," Szostak wrote.

It's a cool detail considering that the lightsaber featured on the poster is supposedly the same one that Anakin Skywalker once owned and was passed on by Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke. In that case, we shouldn't be completely surprised that Kylo ended up creating a lightsaber that looks a lot like the one in the poster.

Kylo's lightsaber is decidedly different from other lightsabers but it isn't because of the crossguard design. Fans have noticed that the weapon crackles and appears to be unstable whenever Kylo ignites it. Although it might be a sign that Kylo isn't very good at building lightsabers (I mean, he's good at destroying things), it is believed to represent his own volatile nature.

You can see the crossguard lightsaber for the last time in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is still screening in theaters around the globe.
