There is little doubt that the premiere episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 was all about introducing Michael Burnham into the 32nd Century. However, That Hope Is You, Part 1 also made sure to answer an important question: What happened to the Federation after all this time?

In Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1, we immediately see Michael dropping in through the wormhole and taking a nasty bump into a ship being piloted by Book. The crash results in both of them having to make an emergency landing.

It doesn't take long before Michael finds out what happened to the Federation and Starfleet. Interestingly, the collapse was brought about by a cataclysmic event known as "The Burn" where the Dilithium crystals that enable warp travel in starship cores were violently destabilized. Unfortunately, this meant that the Federation ended up being cut off from each other.

However, Michael doesn't lose hope. She holds on to it as she bonds with Book, goes around as a trader who is also in search of a sliver of stable Dilithium that can power his next trip across the stars.

Although it initially looks like we'll have to wait for another episode to find out a little bit more about the Federation, Michael and Book find a Federation outpost and meet Aditya Sahil. Aditya is a Federation civilian and his hope shines strongest in the episode as he explains how he believes other civilians like him might be waiting in similar outposts for a chance to reunite with others. With that in mind, Michael decides to ask Aditya and Book to join her as she waits for the rest of the crew of the Discovery.

For now, it's unclear if Michael will be reunited with the Discovery crew immediately in the second episode. Nevertheless, we conclude with hopes that it will happen sooner than we think.

The next episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is titled Far From Home and will premiere on CBS All Access on October 22.
