Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Might Eliminate the Universal Translator

There is a good reason why Trekkies are already looking forward to Star Trek: Discovery Season 3. As revealed in the latest teaser, the series will be set in the distant future where things have changed a lot and Michael Burnham might be needing an ally to help her find her way back. But just how drastic are these new changes? A new report suggests that the third season could be groundbreaking as it could finally eliminate the use of the Universal Translator.

The Universal Translator has long been the easy explanation for just about everything in the Star Trek Universe. The device was introduced to easily explain away how everyone understands each other and why everyone speaks English. Of course, this doesn't always work, as shown in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Darmok. Nevertheless, the Translator has always been convenient for the shows.

But have we reached a time when the Universal Translator is finally obsolete. Inverse suggests that this could happen in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3. After all, the upcoming season will be set in the year 3187, which means that technology is probably too advanced for Discovery's computer. In addition to that, language itself may have changed so much that someone from the past wouldn't understand it (just imagine people from the 1800s trying to comprehend the way we talk these days).

So will this happen in Discovery Season 3? For now, it looks like everyone is still conveniently speaking English but this could change once we get a new trailer for the upcoming season.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is expected to premiere on CBS All Access later this year.
