Original Darth Maul Design Led to Star Wars Bounty Hunter's Komari Vosa's Tragic Look

We already know that not all concept art made for Star Wars end up being part of the final outcome. However, these awesome designs still manage to get reused for other projects. That might be the case for the original look that Darth Maul was supposed to have in the Star Wars prequel films. Although Iain McCaig's first design was discarded, it ended up inspiring the final look for Komari Vosa in the video game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

Bounty Hunter may have been about Jango Fett but it also introduced Komari, the former pupil of Darth Tyranus who proved to be a truly tragic character. Unlike most Sith, Komari was clearly unhinged and her pain was all too obvious. Although she was a completely new character, her look was actually inspired by a fellow Sith.

This was confirmed by Bounty Hunter creative director Jon Knoles when he spoke to Screenrant. According to Knoles, he was inspired by the first design McCaig made of Maul which showed a pale face with red stringy hair. The look had famously terrified George Lucas, who has shocked when McCaig presented him with the art.

Knoles stated that he wanted Komari's look to reflect the pain that she has been through after she was rejected by Count Dooku who initially trained her. Needless to say, this is one tragic character whose look truly shows what she has endured.
