Obi-Wan Kenobi Spinoff Film Reportedly Being Filmed By George Lucas In Ireland

It's a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. The Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie might be underway and will reportedly be filmed in Ireland by none other than Star Wars creator George Lucas himself.

The news comes from a truly unexpected source. British politician Boris Johnson actually dropped some interesting details during his speech at the DUP conference on Friday. In an effort to enumerate the various accolades of the UK, Johnson revealed that Lucas is already planning to shoot the Kenobi standalone film in Ireland (you can read his full speech here).

An excerpt of the speech reads as follows:

"We have more Nobel prizes from one Cambridge college than from Russia and China combined. By far the most dynamic creative culture and media industries. Which was the biggest grossing movie last year? Star Wars and where does George Lucas propose to make a follow up about Obi-Wan Kenobi? Northern Ireland."

Johnson probably should have just dropped the mic right there but he had other things to talk about. Nevertheless, the reference to the Kenobi movie didn't go unnoticed.

It's still unclear if Lucas is already scouting locations in Ireland. After all, we have yet to find any confirmation that the Kenobi film is actually happening. Last we've heard, the movie has been put on hold but it sounds like Lucas is eager to move forward with it as soon as possible.

It's important to point out that Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet confirmed Johnson's information about the standalone movie. Nevertheless, we are hoping that an announcement will be made soon enough about the highly anticipated Star Wars flick.

Although it's still unclear when the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff will begin production, Star Wars: Episode IX is currently being filmed in the UK. The sequel is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
