Netflix Refuses To Remove Controversial Footage From Bird Box

Love it or hate it, Bird Box is currently one of the most viewed films on Netflix. Although the Sandra Bullock flick had its own terrifying scenes, the movie is now facing controversy for some brief footage of a real-life tragedy. However, the streaming giant has no plans of removing the said sequence at all.

It was previously reported that Bird Box is under fire for using actual footage from the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster in Canada. The train tragedy took place in July 2013 and resulted in the loss of 47 lives. The footage was only used sparingly in the film but it was enough to be noticed by the residents of Lac-Mégantic. Although a spokesperson for Netflix has addressed the issue, there are no plans to remove the scene from the film.

"We will keep the clip in the movie," the spokesperson told Associated Press. However, the streaming giant "will be looking at ways to do things differently moving forward."

The footage was licensed by Netflix from the stock image vendor Pond 5, which has since apologized since the footage "was taken out of context."

Lac-Mégantic Mayor Julie Morin had initially decried Netflix for using the footage. However, she has since confirmed that a meeting with a Netflix representative had proved productive as the streaming giant is taking preventative action in the future.

"They've committed to reflecting with their partners on the use of these images so that the situation does not repeat itself. We also felt they were sensitive to our citizens' recovery. I'm satisfied with this exchange," Morin said in a statement.

Bird Box is currently streaming on Netflix.
