People might think that Joaquin Phoenix has no problem pulling off an award-winning performance. However, the Joker star has just admitted that he continues to fear working on a film set.
Phoenix was recently a guest on 60 Minutes where he revealed that he has a certain fear about working on movies. Interestingly, the Gladiator actor is terrified that he will not be able to portray his characters properly in the limits of a film set.
"There are so many things that I want to express ... when I take on a role," Phoenix said. "And so I guess I am just nervous that I'm not going to be able to find the right kind of space to express that."
Luckily for Phoenix, he got some help from Joker director Todd Phillips so he could properly portray Arthur Fleck. Phoenix explained that he had trouble with a certain scene where Arthur was supposed to hide the gun he used in his first murder. However, he and Phillips worked it out and the director played some music for Phoenix which led to the iconic bathroom dance.
Needless to say, Phoenix is grateful to Phillips for helping him deal with Arthur's mindset.
"It felt like the character had moved way past that… there was the opportunity to express something else, but I didn't know precisely what," Phoenix said. "I thought there was some kind of movement. That it was some kind of physical transformation, right? A metamorphosis."
This was definitely a great move that led to one of the most memorable scenes in Joker. We're certainly glad that Phillips knew how to get the best performance from Phoenix.
Phoenix has just been arrested in Washington DC for attending a climate change protest.
