Joker Sequel In Jeopardy As Joaquin Phoenix Refuses To Return As Arthur Fleck

The success of Joker has already made fans expect a sequel that would continue Arthur Fleck's story. Unfortunately, there's one person who isn't interested in seeing Joker 2. Joaquin Phoenix has just stated that he has no plans of returning as the Clown Prince of Crime and even called the idea "ridiculous."

Phoenix recently spoke to The Los Angeles Times where he was asked if he would consider reprising his role for a second movie. Interestingly, the Gladiator star didn't mince words with his response.

"I wouldn't just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful," Phoenix said. "That's ridiculous."

Although he has no plans of playing Arthur again, Phoenix admitted that he and director Todd Phillips actually considered the possibility of a sequel. However, they weren't really serious about it at all.

"Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels," Phoenix confessed. "In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There's way too much to explore.' It was kind of in jest — but not really."

It's a shocking answer for fans who are convinced that a Joker sequel is in order. However, it's also a reasonable response from Phoenix considering that playing Arthur was not an easy task. Unfortunately, this means that Joker 2 isn't happening with Phoenix even if Warner Bros. is planning a second movie.

Joker is still screening in theaters worldwide.
