John Boyega Confirms Star Wars Episode IX Time Jump

It looks like Star Wars: Episode IX will follow one of the franchise' old traditions. John Boyega has just confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel will take place a full year after the events in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

It was previously reported that Episode IX will take a small leap into the future. This is the first time that the time jump will happen in the new trilogy. After all, The Last Jedi took place immediately after the events in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which concluded with Rey trying to give Luke Skywalker his old lightsaber.

Interestingly, one of the EpisodeIX stars actually confirmed the one-year gap. Boyega reportedly admitted that the time jump is happening in the latest issue of Empire magazine (via ComicBook.com).

Time jumps have been an ongoing tradition in the Star Wars Universe. The films in the original trilogy were separated by several years. The same could be said about the prequels. Interestingly, it could also be director J.J. Abrams' way to putting some distance between what happened in The Last Jedi and Episode IX.

Boyega is certainly having so much fun working on Episode IX and embracing the whole franchise that he doesn't even mind when it somehow interrupts his leisure time. The Pacific Rim: Uprising star recently visited Disney World with his friends and was promptly "arrested" by Stormtroopers. Luckily, Boyega managed to escape and enjoy some rides at the park.

Star Wars: Episode IX has not yet been given an official title. The film is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
