Here's The Spider-Ham Joke That Was Deleted From Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

There is little doubt that Spider-Ham was the scene-stealer in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Although Peter Porker's jokes were always on point in the film, there was one punchline that had to be deleted for being insensitive and could potentially offend several fans.

Rodney Rothman was recently a guest on Jeff Smith's The Q&A podcast where the Into The Spider-Verse co-director spoke about bringing Spider-Ham into the film. Interestingly, Rothman revealed that they had actually chosen to delete a Peter Porker scene although it was a huge hit with test screenings. He shared that Spider-Ham was supposed to make a joke after trying to comfort Miles Morales.

"The way that scene [originally] went is Noir said he lost his Uncle Benjamin, Peter lost Uncle Ben, and Gwen lost Peter," Rothman said. "We went through everyone. Spider-Ham said he lost his Uncle Frankfurter. And then he said, ‘He was electrocuted, and it smelled so good.'"

OK, that sure is funny but Rothman and the crew decided to scrap it anyway since it could take away Spider-Ham's moment of sincerity. In addition to that, they believed it was a "bad laugh."

"Spider-Man is a real person with real feelings, and we wanted people to get that," Rothman stated.

Although we didn't get an Uncle Frankfurter joke, it looks like Into The Spider-Verse had all the right moves. The film has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards. It is up against Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
