George Lucas' Original Star Wars Script Reveals Luke And Leia Weren't Supposed To Be Twins

There is little doubt that the original Star Wars trilogy had its share of truly shocking plot twists. After all, nobody expected Luke Skywalker to be the son of Darth Vader or that Luke would actually be Princess Leia's brother. However, the original script may have revealed that George Lucas didn't intend for the two characters to be twins.

The old draft of the original Star Wars screenplay recently surfaced on Reddit and featured some interesting details about the movie (via Express). In the script, Luke is described in a certain way when we first meet him.

"A death-white wasteland stretches from horizon to horizon. The tremendous heat of two huge twin suns settle on a lone figure, Luke Skywalker, a farm boy with heroic aspirations who looks much younger than his eighteen years," it reads.

The screenplay confirms that Luke was already 18. However, the description of Leia reveals she is a different age.

"A familiar clanking sound attacks Threepio's attention and he spots little Artoo at the end of the hallway in a smoke-filled alcove. A beautiful young girl (about sixteen years old) stands in front of Artoo."

The script implies that Leia was two years younger than Luke, making it impossible for them to be twins. However, it's still possible that Leia looked younger than she truly is.

Luke and Leia's real connection was revealed in Return of the Jedi and was further confirmed when Anakin Skywalker's wife Padme Amidala gave birth to twins in Revenge of the Sith.

The twins will return in Star Wars: Episode IX, which premieres on December 20.
