Francis Ford Coppola Agrees With Martin Scorsese, Calls Marvel Films 'Despicable'

It looks like Martin Scorsese is not the only legendary filmmaker who isn't impressed with comic book movies. The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola has just revealed that he agrees with the Taxi Driver director and even went as far as to say that Marvel films are "despicable."

Coppola was recently in attendance at the Prix Lumiere in Lyon, France where he was given an award for his contribution to the film industry (via Yahoo!). Interestingly, Coppola confirmed that he is on Scorsese's side when it comes to Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

"When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration," Coppola said. "I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again."

Coppola then added that Scorsese was actually being nice with his comments and offered his own opinion about Marvel films.

"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is," he said.

Ouch. Shots fired, indeed. Although Coppola is entitled to his own opinion about Marvel movies, there is little doubt that there are millions of fans who will disagree with him.

Scorsese previously made headlines after he claimed that Marvel movies are "not cinema" and compared them to "theme parks." Since then, several Marvel supporters have spoken out about the comments including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's James Gunn, who expressed his disappointment with how Scorsese feels about Gunn's projects.
