Final Fantasy XIV Director Wants To Work With George RR Martin When He Finishes ASOIAF

What's the best way to get George R.R. Martin to finish The Winds of Winter AND A Dream of Spring? Perhaps a collaboration with the makers of Final Fantasy XIV will do the trick. Naoki Yoshida has just expressed interest in working with the Game of Thrones author but only if Martin finishes A Song of Ice and Fire.

Yoshida recently spoke to Variety about the new Final Fantasy XIV expansion Shadowbreakers during E3 2019. However, the game's creative director also revealed that he is a huge fan of Martin and is hoping to work with the author on a possible crossover.

"This is not a game, but Game of Thrones is a very interesting work, and it might be cool to do something with them," Yoshida said.

Interestingly, Yoshida was glad to know that Martin didn't attend E3 ("Just finish writing the books!" he said) although he had worked with FromSoftware on the new game Elden Ring. Additionally, he seemed unbothered about how Game of Thrones has already concluded and just wants Martin to finish A Song of Ice and Fire before discussing a collaboration.

"The series ended on HBO, but we want the books to conclude," Yoshida said.

This certainly sounds like an interesting collaboration but it's also one that might not happen soon. Although Martin is reportedly almost done with the sixth ASOIAF book, he will still need to work on A Dream of Spring, which is set to be the final novel in the series. Either way, we are hoping that Yoshida's offer will inspire Martin to finish the books as soon as possible.

The Final Fantasy XIV expansion Shadowbreakers will be released on July 2. The Winds of Winter does not have a release date yet but will hopefully be published sometime before the end of the century.
