Fantastic Beasts 2 Credence Plot Twist May Have Confirmed Grindelwald Is Still Lying

There is little doubt that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is all about Johnny Depp's villainous character. However, the film's most shocking plot twist possibly confirmed that Grindelwald is just as clueless as the rest of us.

Spoilers Ahead! You Have Been Warned!

In Fantastic Beasts 2, Credence Barebone was desperate to learn about his true identity. Although it is initially believed that he is Corvus Lestrange, her supposed half-sister Leta revealed that the real Corvus is long dead, having drowned as the ship they were traveling on sank. Leta admitted that she had exchanged baby Corvus with baby Credence, who was traveling with an unknown woman.

Credence's identity is still unknown to everyone except Grindelwald, who enticed the young man to join him in exchange for the important information. Grindelwald then informs Credence that he is Aurelius Dumbledore, the long-lost relative of his nemesis Albus Dumbledore.

It's certainly a huge plot twist that had everyone's jaw hanging open. However, it doesn't seem to line up with Grindelwald's actions in the first Fantastic Beasts film. After all, Grindelwald had previously chased after an Obscurial even though he didn't know who it was. He only took interest in Credence when it was revealed that the boy had been the Obscurial all along.

So does this confirm that Grindelwald had been lying to Credence in an effort to use the boy against Dumbledore? There's a huge possibility that the wizard is simply manipulating Credence once again. However, he did call Credence a "squib" in the first movie, suggesting that he knew Ezra Miller's character was from a wizard family. It looks like we'll need to wait until the third film to find out the truth about Credence.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
