Disney+ Willow Series Adds Crazy Rich Asians Director, Ron Howard Confirmed as EP

It looks like the Willow series is finally moving forward as the highly anticipated Disney+ project taps Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu to helm the pilot.

The announcement comes from Lucasfilm.com which reveals that Chu will direct the pilot written by Solo: A Star Wars Story scribe Jonathan Kasdan. He will also serve as executive producer along with showrunners Kasdan and Wendy Mericle. Ron Howard, who directed the original film, will also serve as executive producer on the show.

Chu expressed his excitement for being a part of the project.

"Growing up in the'80s, Willow has had a profound effect on me," he said. "The story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream-come-true. It's a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can't wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us."

This is certainly great news considering that fans are eager to revisit Willow after several decades. Although the series was teased last year, updates have been slow until the recent announcement. Hopefully, the project will begin production soon so we can find out what happened to Willow after all these years.

The Willow series has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
