Bryan Cogman's Game Of Thrones Prequel Series Cancelled By HBO

The final season of Game of Thrones is not yet over but we already have confirmation that one of its prequel shows will not be happening. Bryan Cogman, who wrote most of the most memorable episodes in the series, including Season 8's A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms, has just revealed that the successor show he was working on has been canceled.

Cogman recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his contribution to Game of Thrones Season 8. Interestingly, the longtime writer and co-executive producer shared that he is saying goodbye to the series after Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 2.

"I'm definitely leaving. I was developing one of the successor shows with George [RR Martin]. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane [Goldman], whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way. I'm working with Amazon now and helping them out with their shows. So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros," Cogman confessed.

It's certainly surprising news but Cogman insists that the end is "wonderfully bittersweet" for him. He is also aware of how the series has changed a lot of people but is eager to move forward.

"I'm eager to start the next chapter, but a part of my heart will always live with Game of Thrones. That's one of the reasons why this episode was so important to me. It was a goodbye and a love letter to these characters and to this cast," Cogman said.

There were initially five successor shows planned to follow after Game of Thrones. Although it is unclear if the other shows have also been canceled, we can rest assured that there is one prequel series that will push through in the future.

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 will air on HBO on April 28.
