Black Panther Beats Star Wars: The Last Jedi As Top US Blu-ray In 2018

Wakanda is ready for US domination. Black Panther has just overtaken Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the top-selling Blu-ray in the United States so far.

According to The-Numbers, the Black Panther disc has officially sold more than 3,912,932 units in North America since its release on May 15. That gives the Blu-ray a small advantage against The Last Jedi, which has sold over 3,896,015 units. The Pixar animated film Coco is in third place with 3,427,193 units, followed by Thor: Ragnarok with 3,064,931 units.

Although Black Panther has sold more units, The Last Jedi still has greater earnings with a total gross of $84,963,535. The MCU film trails the Star Wars movie with $82,225,434 in earnings.

It certainly looks like Disney is the real winner here. After all, the top four Blu-Rays in the US are all Disney movies that have already dominated in the domestic box office.

Black Panther is certainly getting a lot of support from Disney these days. It was previously reported that the studio is pushing for the Ryan Coogler film to be nominated for Best Picture in the upcoming Academy Awards. In addition to that, Disney is lobbying for Coogler's possible nomination as Best Director and Chadwick Boseman for Best Actor. It is still unclear if the Academy is considering Black Panther for any major or technical awards next year.

Fans are also hoping that a Black Panther sequel will be confirmed later in 2018. However, Marvel and Disney have yet to comment on the possibility.
