Birds Of Prey Not A Suicide Squad Sequel, Will Focus On Harley Quinn's Story

It looks like there won't be a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad. The writer of Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has just confirmed that the new DC film will focus more on Margot Robbie's character.

Christina Hodson recently spoke to Total Film about the highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe flick (via Harley Quinn Updates). Interestingly, Hodson clarified that Birds of Prey is more of "a standalone story" that will shift away from the David Ayer movie.

"Obviously, yes, it's a character we have met before, but it's really its own story, and that's kind of how I approached it. I just tried to take myself off-leash. I fell in love with this character, and then all of these other new characters. And I just created a brand new story that felt like its own thing, and that doesn't have to feel like it follows one or the other," Hodson said.

This certainly makes a lot of sense considering that Robbie is the only character from Suicide Squad that will appear in Birds of Prey. Although there have been previous reports that Jared Leto's Joker will have a cameo in the film, it's a scene that focuses more on the characters' failed relationship. Besides, there's a completely different Suicide Squad movie to look forward to in the future.

We already know that James Gunn is working on The Suicide Squad which will bring in some of the characters from the first film but somehow serves as a reboot. Sure, it's still not a sequel but Harley Quinn fans are happy to know that Robbie has more movies to work on.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will premiere on February 7, 2020. The Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021.
