Avengers: Endgame Director Says Robert Downey Jr Deserves An Oscar

There is little doubt that the cast of Avengers: Endgame turned in some truly amazing performances. However, Joe Russo says that Robert Downey Jr. is the one star who definitely deserves an Academy Award for giving a heartbreaking performance as Tony Stark.

Fans saw a truly vulnerable side of Tony Stark in Endgame. From his frail appearance in the first few minutes of the film to his endearing moments with his daughter, Tony had some slight yet noticeable changes. However, Tony also proved that he is still the same guy as he struggled to keep his composure when facing his own father in the past and when he ultimately donned the Infinity Gauntlet to snap away Thanos and his forces, sacrificing himself for the sake of the entire universe.

So was it a performance that should be noticed by the Academy Awards? Joe Russo believes Downey should be given recognition for his Endgame performance.

"His cumulative body of work from these movies is staggering. If you look at the work over just even the last four [Marvel] films he's done, it's phenomenal," the Endgame co-director told The Washington Post. "He deserves an Oscar perhaps more than anyone in the last 40 years because of the way that he has motivated popular culture."

Russo even added one more reason why Downey should get an Oscar: "He has the world in tears right now."

The Endgame co-director isn't the only one who thinks so. Marvel fans believe Downey should win the Academy Award for Best Actor as well.

Although the Academy doesn't have a category for superhero movies, that doesn't mean that an actor hasn't won an award for playing a comic book character. The late Heath Ledger was posthumously awarded the Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight in 2008. Perhaps there is a chance that Downey could bring home the Oscar after all.
