Nintendo Switch Won’t Play Older Cartridges & Discs

Among the rumors and leaks that have been circulating about the Nintendo Switch before the trailer was released, there has been talk about the new console bringing back the use of cartridges for games.

However, it appears that this won't be the case, at least not for older games on the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS. According to an interview with Famitsu via Engadget), the Nintendo Switch can't play Wii U discs or Nintendo 3DS cartridges.

In a way, this is understandable, considering how the Nintendo Switch is supposed to be a brand new console, and not a successor of either of the platforms. However, it does make fans wonder if this also means that backward compatible titles of a digital nature from the older Nintendo consoles are also not possible.

This may be bad news for fans who are looking to continue playing older games. For now, Nintendo has not yet announced any successors for its Nintendo 3DS console. Speaking to Polygon, a Nintendo rep did state that sales for the Nintendo consoles now in the market need not eat off each other.

"Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there's still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. There are many more games in the pipeline."

But even then, it also appears that Nintendo is gearing to temper its sales expectations and supplies, especially with the upcoming Nintendo Switch.

"We announced in April 2016 that as we prepare for the launch of Nintendo Switch in March of 2017, Nintendo will ship 800,000 Wii U hardware units to the global market for this fiscal year. as a result, the inventory of Wii U hardware at retail will become harder to find."

More details are expected to be released for the Nintendo Switch towards its launch early next year.
