Nintendo Cuts Support For Nintendo DS in Japan

In Japan, Nintendo has announced that starting next month, it will no longer support the original Nintendo DS next.

The dual-screen handheld console was launched in Japan in December 2004. The original Nintendo DS became so popular in 2006 that units were important from the U.S. to meet the demand.

According to Inside, however, after April 30 2016, Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters says that it will no longer repair first generation Nintendo DS handhelds. This is to make sure that Nintendo will have enough parts to fix units, but depending on the amount of demand, it's possible that there might not be enough parts before that date, and in that case, Nintendo DS might not be able to repair all units.

In Japan, the company will still repair and support the 3DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, and the DSi XL. Nintendo's announcement specifically states NTR-001, the original DS model number.
