Now that Wonder Woman and Justice League has lightened the DCEU up, there is plenty of excitement for the upcoming Shazam film starring Zachary Levi. Director David Sandberg has previously stated that the film would be the lightest film in DC’s lineup, which makes sense since the lead character is a child who turns into a superhero. Levi has not only backed this up but says that the film could be like Guardians of the Galaxy, in that it is based on an obscure property that took everyone by surprise.

During the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, Levi unsurprisingly talked about the upcoming film and pointed out how it could be like James Gunn’s awesome space romp. The actor praised Gunn’s film, stating that they brought up plenty of heart and humor that made most audiences warm up to these previously unknown characters. Here is the actor’s full statement.

“James Gunn and the gang killed it. It brought so much heart and humor and yeah, I think it was kind of like this dark horse that took everybody by storm and I think Shazam kind of has the possibility to do that because Shazam’s not, for all intents and purposes, not Supes it’s not Batman, it’s not Wonder Woman, it’s not what most of the people [expect.]”

There was a time when Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel, was the most popular comic book hero. Not only was it doing incredibly well in sales, but it would regularly beat Batman and Superman, to the point that DC sued their competitor and bought the character for themselves. Despite that ugly bit of history, Shazam has remained a favorite amongst comic fans, thanks to stories from Jeff Smith, Roy Thomas, and Geoff Johns.

Since Wonder Woman is the only critical darling of the DCEU, fans are hoping Shazam and next year’s Aquaman will become successes for the company. Aquaman is showing on December 21, 2018. Shazam will hit theaters on April 5, 2019.
