Zachary Levi Almost Refused Shazam Role

Shazam is two months away and fans can't wait for the DCEU film to blow them away. Many DC viewers have been excited for this film ever since the first trailer came out and this could end up being better than Aquaman, especially after the press was impressed with 20 minutes of it. It seems like the movie will do well, especially thanks to Zachary Levi channeling his inner-teen, but it turns out that the actor almost didn't make it.

Turns out that Levi wasn't too confident in his chances and originally didn't plan on auditioning, according to producer Peter Safran (via ComicBook.com). While they thought he would have been an easy contender for the role, Levi passed on it first before changing his mind and sending an audition tape.

Here's Safran's full statement:

"It was a very easy casting decision once we saw his tape but it is worth noting that initially 2 months before that we had gone to him and he had passed. And he just did because he didn't believe that he would ever be cast for that role. So he just said, 'I don't want to run tapefor it.'"
"He sent it in on a Friday. Heself taped, he was back on the east coast, self taped on his phone. Sent it in and I think by Monday we had him in LA testing and on Tuesday got the role. Zach is this character. Zach is a 14-year-old boy trapped in a super hero's body. And he would acknowledge that,I'm not saying anything he would not say about himself. He's a kid and it was just so perfect when we saw what he did with the audition and he kinda bought that every single day to being Shazam."

From what the trailers have shown, it seems like Levi will be the perfect Shazam. Anyone who has seen him in Chuck knows that the actor can pull off the whole immature adult character and that's exactly what they need for this superhero.

Shazam comes out on April 5.
