Why Stan Lee's Cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is Heartbreaking

Stan Lee passed away a few months ago and it's made watching his cameos pretty painful, leaving many of us with an intense feeling of emotion. Unsurprisingly, he managed to record dialogue for a quick Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse cameo and it's surprisingly sadder than most people expected. However, spoiling this will also reveal a major story detail so fans might want to wait after watching the movie to read this.

Spoilers for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 3...2...1…

After the original Spider-Man in Miles Morales' universe is killed by Kingpin, New York City starts to mourn for the hero's death. This is particularly heartbreaking for Miles since he a.) could have helped him fight off these foes and b.) was going to be tutored by this version of Spider-Man had he not died.

We then see Miles buying a Spider-Man costume from none other than Stan Lee himself and he stated that he missed Spidey and even mentioned that the hero was his friend. While the context of this scene was likely done so that Stan could make some money, the real-world context adds some tragedy to this since it seemed like a subtle way to say that he missed original Spider-Man artist Steve Ditko, who passed away this year before Lee.

Also, there are now so many versions of Spider-Man but only one Stan Lee and he's gone. It's just a lot to take in.

One of the film's post-credit sequences also has a message from Lee, which should add more tears. Here is hoping that he enjoys this movie, wherever he is.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now showing in theaters.
