Toy Story 4 is Great, But Can't Beat Spirited Away in China

Sorry Pixar, but all the Rotten Tomatoes reviews in the world couldn't help Toy Story 4 in China. Sure, it's still making a lot of money in other parts of the world but it lost in China and it didn't lose to one of the country's own films. Nope, of all the movies it could lose to, Toy Story 4 ended up losing to Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away.

According to Variety, Disney and Pixar's film debuted in second place, earning a disappointing $13.2 million. Compare that to Ghibli's beloved Spirited Away, which earned a decent $28 million. This is pretty solid for a 20-year-old movie and is actually double the amount of money that Toy Story 4. Disney might be able to overthrow Avatar but it seems like being no. 1 in China is still a struggle.

Considering all the positive press that the film received, losing to an old anime film must be humiliating. Granted, Spirited Away is one of the best-animated productions ever created and it's amazing to know that a lot of Chinese people haven't seen it (or they just want to see it on the big screen) but this is a loss Disney didn't expect.

Disney does distribute the film in America but that isn't the case in China. Looks like Disney can be beaten by anime, just not in the US. It's also worth noting that Avengers: Endgame wasn't too successful in Japan, thanks to a Detective Conan film.

Toy Story 4 is now showing in theaters.
