With Thor: Ragnarok slated for a November release, it was only a matter of time before Odinson reclaimed Mjolnir and became the one true Thor again. After losing the ability to hold the mystic weapon during the Original Sin event, it looks like he will finally be able to hold it again in The Mighty Thor #701. However, this might come at a great cost; one that could haunt the God of Thunder forever.
Since this will be the second part of a storyline called Death Of The Mighty Thor, it’s safe to assume that the current Thor, Jane Foster, will either succumb to her cancer, or be killed by a powerful foe. The cover of the issue also has a shattered Mjolnir on it, which looks to be the work of the Mangog. It’s one hell of a way to bring the character back, and it’s clear that writer Jason Aaron won’t make it easy for the Avenger.
Here is the official synopsis of the issue:
• The Mangog comes to Asgard!
• But is one Thor enough to take down the Ultimate Judgment?
• Guest artist James Harren brings his talents to the Mighty Thor!
• It all leads to the most dramatic return in the Marvel Universe!
Throughout his acclaimed run, Jason Aaron always made sure to have the Asgardian wonder if he was truly worthy. He often questioned whether if the Gods were in the right, especially after he encountered Gorr the God Butcher, who turned to a life of murder due to the recklessness of these beings. While Thor did eventually defeat this foe with the help of his younger and older self, it’s clear that the encounter struck a chord with the character, since all Nick Fury had to do was whisper “Gorr was right” to make him unworthy of Mjolnir in Original Sin. Soon after, the hammer deemed Jane Foster worthy of the power and name of Thor.
Will Odinson become worthy again? Fans will have to check out The Mighty Thor #701 in November to find out.
