After many years of being in development hell, the Hollywood adaptation of Akira finally has a release date. Fan-favorite director Taika Waititi, who many know from What We Do in The Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok, will direct the movie and we will (hopefully) see the movie on May 21, 2021. Here's hoping that it comes true and we get an awesome cyberpunk film with awesome visuals.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the long-awaited adaptation is going to come out on May 21, 2021. Interestingly enough, John Wick: Chapter Four has the exact same release date so fans who don't have a lot of time have a very difficult choice to make. Still, now that Alita: Battle Angel has proven that anime movies can be competent and well-done, not to mention Waititi's background, this could be a very good film.

It's also worth noting that Waititi's movie about Michael Jackson's monkey won't be happening now. The movie was canned not too long ago and most of us thought that it had something to do with the fourth John Wick film but that ended up not being the case. Honestly, they might want to change the release date, though things could work in either film's favor.

Akira is considered by many to be one of the best anime movies ever made, so there are a lot of expectations riding on this one. Here is hoping that the live-action movie is half as good as the original anime film.
