Studio Ghibli Films Will Not Stream on Disney+ or Anywhere Else

Disney+ is going to be home to a lot of animation, from classic Disney material to ‘90s Marvel cheese, and even a couple of Pixar hits. However, if you were hoping to see Studio Ghibli films as part of the package, you've got another thing coming. Despite the fact that Disney localized many Ghibli films for US releases, it seems like fans will need to own these movies on Blu-ray or DVD if they want to appreciate them.

In an interview with Polygon, GKids, the North American distributor of Studio Ghibli films, have stated that there are no plans to bring these movies to the streaming medium. That's right, it's not just Disney+ missing out on all that weeb money but also Netflix, Hulu, and other services. This is pretty shocking since anime and streaming services have gone together in recent years.

Here's the explanation from GKids, though fans might not agree with it:

"Studio Ghibli does not make their films available digitally, whether for download or streaming, anywhere in the world. They continue to believe that presentation is vital and particularly appreciate opportunities for audiences to experience the films together in a theatrical setting."

While that's a bit of an arrogant statement, if there are any animated movies you should watch in a theater, Ghibli films are worthy of that treatment. The amount of work put into these films will impress anyone, even non-animation fans. Granted, most of us would like to see these movies on Netflix or Disney+ but let's not get carried away.

Most of the Studio Ghibli films are available on Blu-ray and DVD.
