Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Had Less Production Time Than The Force Awakens

Fans will continue to debate the quality of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with many fans loving its tributes to older Star Wars films and seeing their fanfiction come to reality, while others criticize it for benching Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico and seemingly discarding everything from The Last Jedi. Still, even the film's most hardcore fans can agree with the fact that it felt a little rushed when push comes to shove, with some criticisms saying that the movie feels like two films crammed into one.

As more news about the film's production comes to light, it's become increasingly clear that Disney and LucasFilm didn't plot out this trilogy beforehand, with The Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon admitting that the movie had less production time than The Force Awakens. Brandon shared these details during The Rough Cut podcast (via CinemaBlend), which makes us really sad, to be honest.

Here's Brandon describing how challenging this particular production was:

The way I made up the time. It's a struggle, it affected everything. The script, the art department, everyone in prep. So about a third of the way through, [Kathleen Kennedy] was like: ‘JJ has got to spend more time in the cutting room.' And I knew that wasn't going to happen. Not with the schedule that we were on. Not with what he was dealing with on a daily basis. He was just exhausted at the end of the day.

It really is a shame that Disney and LucasFilm decided to rush out The Rise of Skywalker, even though they had two years to work on this. The fact that J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio decided to take so many cues from Reddit and give us the worst Star Wars twist of all time is a shame but it's not completely their fault, though they should shoulder some of the blame.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker should still be showing in theaters.
