Star-Lord's 'Daddy' Yondu Gets New Comic Book Series from Marvel

It's always weird when a specific comic book comes out later than it should, especially when there's no movie to capitalize on. We're not saying all comics have to tie-in to movies in some way or fashion but when the characters involved are clearly based on their movie counterparts, the situation can be a bit odd. With all that in mind, Marvel Comics has announced a new Yondu comic book series, starring Star-Lord's MCU daddy.

To the credit of series writers Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson, they do have an intriguing premise for this Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off. The series will be a street-level space book, dealing with situations Daredevil and Luke Cage would normally handle but in space. Yondu will explore a number of planets, tell jokes, and fight other criminals, which should be fun.

Another unexpected surprise is that John McCrea will be the series artist. Fans of the artist know that he worked on The Boys and Hitman with Garth Ennis, so his gritty art should be perfect for this comic book's themes. Maybe fans will stop calling Yondu blue Merle and call him blue Butcher instead but I digress.

Here is a summary of the first issue (via ComicBook.com):

YONDU #1
Written by LONNIE NADLER, ZAC THOMPSON
Penciled by JOHN MCCREA
Cover by CULLY HAMNER

Yondu, lone Ravager and all-around scoundrel is about to hit the biggest pay day of his life when he stumbles upon a dangerous new weapon! But when this artefact turns out to be deadlier than he bargained for, will the reward outweigh the risk as Yondu finds himself targeted by a mysterious mercenary? Plus, when an unexpected visitor from the future turns up to stop Yondu, it begs the question: exactly how bad did he screw up?! Find out in this all-new series from ZAC THOMPSON and LONNIE NADLER (AGE OF X-MAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ANNUAL) and JOHN MCCREA (Dead Eyes)!

Readers will be able to pick up Yondu #1 this November.
