Spider-Man: Far From Home Continues the MCU’s Uncle Ben Problem (SPOILERS)

Spider-Man: Far From Home was a pretty great MCU installment, capping off the current era and making sure that phase four will be kicking off with a bang. The film does a lot of things right, fleshing out Peter's motivations post-Endgame, and striking the right balance of humor and heart, like all good MCU movies. However, it does have one big problem and it's concerning Peter's Uncle Ben.

It's the fact that Peter never seems to mention or think about Ben that's the problem.

BIG SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT

During a stellar confrontation with Mysterio, Spider-Man has to fight off illusions but he just can't concentrate on what's real or fake. As the scene progresses, the illusions turn into a graveyard and Mysterio says if Peter was good enough, Tony wouldn't have had to die. However, even with E.D.I.T.H. by his side, Mysterio doesn't use the fact that Peter failed to save Ben to add some angst to his already clouded inner turmoil.

Now, you could argue that Mysterio wouldn't know or care about Ben Parker. That's fair. But why doesn't Peter ever think back to how he could have saved his father figure? It might seem like overkill to some but a scene where he mentions the mugging that got Ben killed would have added to the inner turmoil that Peter is going through.

Instead, it seems like Tony Stark has replaced Ben in this regard. When he hands the E.D.I.T.H. glasses off to Mysterio, he only thinks of what Stark would do and not his uncle's words of power and responsibility.

Spider-Man: Homecoming at least made it apparent that Uncle Ben was still going through Peter and May's heads. When Ned finds out Peter is Spider-Man, Peter begs his friend not to tell his aunt, mentioning how she has been through a lot this year. Another scene where May confronts Peter for his aloofness is also clearly meant to be a reference to Ben since she mentions how terrifying it can be to lose contact with someone, especially at night.

Iron Man replacing Uncle Ben isn't the worst move these films have made and it makes sense within the MCU but a few mentions here and there won't kill anyone.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is now showing in theaters.
