Sony Blames Disney for Spider-Man Deal Breaking Down

A day has passed and we're all still pretty bummed at the news of the Spider-Man deal between Sony and Disney breaking down. Not being able to see Tom Holland's Peter Parker interact with the rest of Marvel's heroes is just depressing, as is the fact that characters like Happy Hogan might not be able to appear in any future Spider-Man sequels. While we hope that the two sides eventually make amends, that won't be happening anytime soon.

Sony released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, essentially blaming Disney for the deal breaking down. While the company is hoping to work on a deal with Disney, they will continue the live-action Spider-Man legacy without Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. At the least, they credited Feige for his work and seem to be open for future negotiations.

Much of today's news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige's involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney's decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.

Honestly, it's still a bit nonsensical for Sony to refuse a deal with Disney to continue this partnership, especially since Spider-Man: Far From Home became the company's highest-grossing movie. The fact that future sequels might have to ignore MCU events is going to be a sore point for a lot of fans and no amount of Venom crossovers is going to make us feel better about it.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be re-released in theaters later this month. Sadly, it appears to be the final time this movie is going to be tied into the MCU.
