Sonic the Hedgehog is Officially the Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie of All Time

Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to exceed or meet the expectations of many to give us a decent movie, which can't be said for a lot of video game movies. The fact that we now have two decent live-action movies with Sonic and Pikachu is kind of crazy so this could start a very good trend of solid video game adaptations. Critical acclaim aside, it seems like these movies also make money as Sonic the Hedgehog is now the highest-grossing film in the US.

According to ComicBookMovie, Sonic has managed to earn $145.8 million, which has topped Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which made a solid $144.1 million. However, the movie isn't the world's highest-grossing video game movie yet since it hasn't been released in China yet. So if we're going by the worldwide box office, Detective Pikachu is still ahead.

With that being said, most video game fans are just happy to have two good video game films. Does this mean that we'll eventually get a Super Smash Bros. movie once Illumination releases their Super Mario Bros. animated movie? Probably not but it's a nice thought. At the least, this is a good sign and should result in more video game movies that are made by actual fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog should still be showing in theaters. No home release for the film has been revealed, as of this writing.
