Shang-Chi Director on Why Simu Liu Was Cast and if Captain Marvel Will Make a Cameo

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a phase four film fans are intrigued by, giving us the real Mandarin and showcasing some Asian star power for the first time. Sure, we've had a few Asian stars appear in the MCU but this is the first time they will be featured in the leading role. With this in mind and all of the Chinese actors available, director Destin Daniel Cretton was asked about Simu Liu's casting and Brie Larson's Captain Marvel appearing.

Cretton was asked by MTV News about Liu's casting and why he was chosen. Getting straight to the point, Cretton called Liu "awesome" and basically said that everyone wanted him for the role. It's not a bad choice by any means and we're interested to see if he can bring interest to this obscure character.

"He's awesome. There's just an undefined thing that when somebody pops, everybody's in agreement, and they're just really excited."

Then again, if Marvel can make the Guardians of the Galaxy relevant, it shouldn't be impossible to make Shang-Chi interesting.

Funnily enough, Cretton was also asked if we would be seeing Brie Larson's Captain Marvel in the movie. This is because Brie Larson appears in most, if not all, of Cretton's films and we're more surprised that he's directing this and not a Captain Marvel sequel. Here's what he had to say.

"I mean, I think there's always room for Brie. But I don't know, we'll see."

It's worth noting that Shang-Chi has been around for a long time and has even played a big role in popular comic events like Spider-Island and Infinity. He's always been a fairly grounded character put in extraordinary situations and we can't wait to see how he's handled in the MCU and if Simu Liu does well in the role.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be coming to theaters on February 12, 2021.
