The Resident Evil film franchise has been an odd one, getting really bad reviews but making really good money. No one knows why this multi-film series has been so successful, with many thinking it’s either the name brand, the action, or Milla Jovovich. Well, after years of bad films it looks like the franchise is going to be rebooted and that’s something that many fans have been wanting to hear.

According to an interview with Discussing Film, screenwriter Greg Russo said that the reboot would be inspired by the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7. Considering how that game made the series scary again, it would make a very good movie, assuming they do it justice and don’t try to make it like a superhero film.

"Obviously, I’m a huge fan of the franchise so to work on that was a lot of fun. And they’ve made six films before so when you come back to that and reboot it, you wanna do something different and not just rehash. For me it was very clear-cut that I wanted to go back and make it scary again like a horror film in terms of the classic James Wan style so that was the pitch, going back and looking what made the games scary in the first place so yea Resident Evil 7 was a bit of a touchstone for my draft."

Russo revealed that he is a huge fan of the franchise so it’s no surprise seeing the 7th game become the inspiration for the film. However, his current involvement with the film is done since he has submitted a draft and is waiting for results. If it’s good, we could get a new Resident Evil movie, though Russo also thinks it could be a series for television.

Instead of fighting Umbrella for the millionth time, Resident Evil 7 has players taking on a cult-like family that has also been the subject of experimentation. The game emphasizes surviving over combat, giving players a first-person view for the first time in series history.

Resident Evil 2 comes out in January 2019.
