Pokemon Sword and Shield Art Director Details the Game's Adorable Starter Intro

Pokemon Sword and Shield have officially been released to the public. While these titles have divided the fanbase, there's no denying that this is a solid Pokemon game that does try to do some new things, though most of us do miss some of our older friends. Still, some of the new Pokemon introduced in Sword and Shield are magnificent, including the three starters that have won fans over: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.

The introduction of these three Pokemon is incredibly precious and actually gives these three monsters some personality, which can't be said for the other starters unless we bring up the anime.

When we are introduced to these three Pokemon, there's an adorable scene where they briefly go their separate ways before Sobble accidentally hits Scorbunny with some water, which causes the fire-type to run like made everywhere, including to Grookey, who is up in a tree. Grookey ends up dropping some fruit to the puddle Sobble is in, which leads to the water-type getting out of the water and crying, before the other two cheer it up.

It's a cute scene and Pokemon Sword and Shield art director James Turner was actually responsible for the Sword and Shield starters intro. On Twitter, Turner revealed that he made this scene so that the games could showcase their personalities, which ended up working. The art director wrote and storyboarded the scene, though he credits Game Freak's animation team for bringing it to life.

Sure, Pokemon Sword and Shield could use some more features from previous titles but it's a fundamentally solid game that brings some quality of life improvements that most of us can't imagine future games without now. Let's just hope Bulbasaur returns in the next game.
