Pokemon Manga Getting Rebooted in Time for Sword and Shield

Pokemon is a pretty hot-button topic these days, with Pokemon Sword and Shield coming out next month for Nintendo Switch and a new anime coming soon. Turns out we're getting even more changes since the long-running Pokemon manga will be ending soon as well, getting a reboot on November 15, just in time for the release of Sword and Shield.

Coro Coro Comics Magazine (via Anime News Network) announced that the long-running manga from Kosaku Anakubo will be ending after a prestigious 23-year tenure. It's not yet known who will be taking up the reigns for this new Pokemon manga, now called Pocket Monsters, but they have big shoes to fill. This is sort of a weird decision since Anakubo has been able to adapt to every generation but it seems like The Pokemon Company wants to try something different.

For those who haven't checked it out, the Pokemon manga can be pretty hardcore. Unlike the games or anime, the manga has actually killed Pokemon several times and has featured very dark stories. You'll have to look it up to see just how messed up this universe can be but know that Pokemon have gotten ripped in half, which is crazy.

As of this writing, not much has been announced about the Pocket Monsters manga but we should probably expect similar storylines unless they want to try a lighter route. In the meantime, fans can check out various volumes of the older manga right now.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are coming to Nintendo Switch on November 15.
