Pennyworth Prequel Show Casts Its Young Alfred

Gotham might be ending after season five but we're getting another Batman prequel soon, in the form of Pennyworth. Epix has reportedly cast Jack Bannon as series lead Alfred Pennyworth, who will only be in his 20's when the series starts. Obviously, this will be set before his Butler days, though he will get to meet a young Thomas Wayne.

Revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, most fans will recognize Bannon from 2014's The Imitation Game, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. He joins a very interesting list of actors who have played the character and is obviously the youngest version of the character thus far. Even the comics haven't really delved into Alfred's past, so this could be very good or very bad.

Just like Gotham (too soon?).

Pennyworth's Alfred is described as a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty, he's the kind of person people would never take for a SAS killer. Alfred doesn't know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He's a man on the make, who doesn't know what to make of himself yet.

Coming from premium cable network Epix, the series is not part of the Gotham television universe, despite having the same showrunner Bruno Heller. The fact that he was chosen to helm yet another Batman prequel series can't be a coincidence, though we will probably have to accept the fact that Gotham will be over for good after season five.

No release date for Pennyworth has been announced.
